What’s on top of your bedside cabinet?

What’s on top of your bedside cabinet?

, by Sarah Frame, 1 min reading time

A book you are genuinely reading.

A book you are no longer reading but cannot bring yourself to move because that would mean admitting something.

A glass of water that was fresh on Tuesday.

A mug that was brought up with the best of intentions.

A phone charger that has already been behind the cabinet once this week.

A lip balm you cannot find when you need it but can always find at midnight.

Something that belongs to a child. You have no idea how it got there. It has been there for weeks.

A receipt for something you cannot remember buying.

Hand cream you apply roughly twice a year.

A book light you were very excited about in November.

That earring.

Something aspirational. A journal perhaps. A crystal. A self help book face down at page twelve.

And underneath all of it. Holding all of it. Asking nothing of you in return.

The cabinet itself.

Steady. Unhurried. Making room for whatever the day leaves behind.

That is what good furniture does. It just gets on with it while you get on with living.
