Since the early sixties, the Old English Sheepdog became increasingly known as a ‘Dulux Dog’.
So, how did this huge, fluffy, lovable hound become synonymous with painting and decorating?
Well, it turns out it was almost by accident.
A UK advertising agency called Collett Dickenson Pearce was creating a new TV and press campaign for Dulux and they decided to include a dog in the ads to make the brand more friendly and approachable.
The first sheepdog they used actually belonged to one of the production team and was called Shepton Daphnis Horsa.
Let’s call him ’Shep’, shall we?
And Shep was an immediate hit. His endearing appearance and playful personality quickly captured the public’s imagination.
The Dulux dog became so popular that it was used in nearly every advertising campaign for Dulux paint from then on.
The ads often played on the dog's fluffy coat, suggesting that Dulux paint would make your home just as cozy and beautiful.
Even today, the Dulux Dog features in the ads, making it one of the most charming and recognisable brand mascots in the world.
Dinner party fact: Dulux is a brand name made from combining the words ‘durable’ and ‘luxury’.
