The word 'apothecary' is derived from the Greek word 'apotheca', meaning a place where wine, spices and herbs were stored. During the thirteenth century it came into use in this country to describe a person who kept a stock of these commodities, which they sold from a shop or street stall.

Years later, apothecary storage furniture is all the rage. Typically, a cabinet will feature a multitude of small drawers and will be visually interesting for that reason alone.
The inspiration from the pharmacy makes sense, when you think about it. Most chemists are effectively store rooms containing many small items that need to be kept organised.
